A Bibb County board next month is scheduled to vote on a proposed 1 million-square-foot distribution center that would employ more than 600 people.
Documents filed with the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission do not identify the company that would own the building.
But they say it would handle, ship and store a wide variety of food products. They would include "canned and frozen foods, dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables, and fresh and prepared meats, fish and poultry."
"I'm not opposed to it," says neighbor Jimmy Bennett. He's lived off Sardis Church Road since the 1970s and says that the new building could be good for the area.
The distribution center would also offer some on-site sales.
"I usually shop at Kroger, but if they have a good deal, then I might shop with them," says Bennett.
The center -- labeled with a code name, " Project Unicorn" -- would be located at 4995 Skipper Road, off Sardis Church Road and Interstate 75, at Exit 153.
13WMAZ could not reach the developer's attorney, Don Carter, for comment.
The Project Unicorn application to the commission said they'd employ around 600 people, rising to around 1,000 at peak times of year.
"I think we can stand to get all the jobs we can here in the neighborhood," says Bennett.
The commission is scheduled to vote Oct. 9 on a conditional use for a building taller than 35 feet.
The application includes plans for traffic improvements at the Sardis Church-Skipper Road intersection, which the traffic consultant said is "failing."
The distribution center would open in October 2018, the application says.
The site -- 86 acres values at $249,683 -- is owned by the Macon-Bibb Industrial Authority.
