Bibb County sees increase in commercial robberies

Bibb sees increase in commercial robberies

After 3 commercial armed robberies in Bibb County this week, we began digging deeper.

Lt. Randy Gonzalez says the Sheriff's Office has already seen an increase in the number of commercial robberies compared to last year.

The violence has left some Macon businesses concerned for their employees' safety.

Dozens of gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants line the streets of Tom Hill Senior Boulevard. Friday morning, one of them was robbed at gunpoint.

Around 5 a.m., Bibb deputies were dispatched to Dunkin Donuts after a man fired one shot inside the store and ran off with cash.

This was the third commercial armed robbery in Bibb this week, and the first one that didn't leave an employee dead.

Diggy Anthony is the manager at the Buffalo Wild Wings on Tom Hill Senior Blvd, which is located just up the street from Dunkin Donuts.

"I'm not sure whats going on, but hopefully it's something that can pass," says Anthony. "We try to take the proper precautions to keep ourselves out of situations like that."

Anthony says the store has security cameras stationed around the building, and he requires his employees to use the buddy system when they're coming and going.

"Whenever we're opening or closing, there is at least a manager and another team member in the building," says Anthony.

Which Lt. Randy Gonzalez with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office says is a good idea.

"These types of crimes can happen in any area," says Gonzalez.

Since January 1, Gonzalez says there have been 60 commercial robberies, which is already an increase from last year when 56 commercial robberies were reported.

"It is a concern for us that we do have a little bit of an increase in our commercial robberies this year," says Gonzalez.

Gonzalez says some deputies have increased their patrols around dollar stores and convenience stores, which is where he says a majority of the robberies take place.

Gonzalez says no arrests have been made in the three commercial armed robberies that happened this week and they are all still under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Bibb County Sheriff's Office at 478-751-7500.
