Bibb senior citizens protest new center design

Bibb citizens protest center design

About 40 senior citizens filled the aisles at the Bibb County commission meeting after holding a protest outside of the Government Center.

The seniors were trying to stop the commissioners from voting on the design for the new senior center. Several senior citizens say the plan is not what they were promised, and it lacks several important things like a kitchen.

They asked for the commission to hold off on the vote until the next SPLOST.

Several seniors spoke up during the meeting saying that the county needs to show more respect for their seniors.

However, the commission still moved forward with the $3 million plan. Commissioner Elaine Lucas says they are still willing to work with the seniors to accommodate their requests. She says they just needed to go ahead and get moving on the building.

"We just did not want to slow down the process by tabling it tonight. We approved it so we can go ahead and start planning, take one more step to getting the senior citizens center in place, but there's still a lot of work and a lot of discussion," says Lucas.

Lucas says the commission is inviting seniors to the committee meeting next Tuesday to discuss adding some of the features they want.
