My Teacher is Tops: Donny Screws

Not too long ago, Donny Screws walked the halls of Dodge Middle School in Eastman as a student. Now, he's a teacher at the school, and for the second time in his career, he is taking home a top honor.

Screws teaches sixth grade earth science at Dodge County Middle School.

Jamerius Hines described him as "cool, awesome, he's great at experiments."

"What we're learning in here is not just on paper, it's happening in the world," said Screws.

12-year-old Shakerria Clemons nominated him for the "My Teacher is Tops" award.

"Kids brag about him every year. He makes school a lot more interesting. When he teaches us, he takes us step by step," she said.

In college, Screws recognized his passion for teaching.

"Every day, I look forward to coming to work. And the kids are just wonderful. Every day, they make me smile," said Screws.

Jamerius Hines wants to pursue a career in science because of Screws.

"It's fun and you can learn, students they can learn from science, like from technology or plants," said Hines.

Screws said teaching has taught him to be a lifetime learner.

"If you're gonna teach, you have to continually learn. Always read, always research and learn about the world around you."
