Stepson charged in Wheeler woman's death

UPDATE: 1:25 PM: John Anthony Higginbotham is charged with felony murder and malice murder in the death of his stepmother.

According to a GBI news release, the two argued outside her home on Tuesday night and John Higginbotham shot her.

He was arrested Wednesday.

UPDATE: 1:15 P.M. A man is now in custody in Tuesday night's killing of a Wheeler County woman.

That's according to the GBI's Eastman office.

He is reportedly a family member of victim Belinda Higginbotham, but his name has not been released.

A body was found in Wheeler County on Tuesday afternoon at 271 Hope Church Road. The GBI said Wednesday morning that the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Belinda Higginbotham, 47, was found dead lying in her front yard in Glenwood.

GBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Lindsey Giddens said the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at 5:44 p.m. from one of Higginbotham's family members. Officers arrived and found Higginbotham dead outside in her yard with a fatal gunshot wound.

Her body was sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Macon for an autopsy.

No suspects have been named.
