Caisson unit fundraiser Saturday in Pulaski County

Caisson unit fundraiser Saturday in Pulaski

Friday, the horse-drawn carriage unit known as the Caisson will get a police escort down 1-16 to Eastman.

There they will circle through town to pay respect to officer Tim Smith, who died in the line of duty last year.

They should be in Eastman between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. The Caisson travels in its own tractor trailer with North Carolina markings on the outside.

They will spend the weekend in Hawkinsville for a fundraiser.

Every year, the Caisson unit honors falling officers by taking part in dozens of police funerals in several states around the southeast.

"So when I found out that they are a 501c3 non-profit and function solely off the donations of others, I was shocked and I was like, 'We've got to get people to know about this. We've got to get them involved,' because they don't charge the unit that they're coming to carry or the families one dime," said volunteer Chelsea Tyner.

It's because of their generosity that M&T Meats will hold a fundraiser for the unit Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the afternoon.

They will raffle off Yeti items and two Green Egg smokers.  Georgia State Patrol will also have their chopper on site and you can take pictures in front of a Tony Stewart NASCAR vehicle.

The folks that organized this say they wanted to give back to the unit that visited Georgia so many times in 2016.

M&T Meats is located at 305 Lower River Road in Pulaski County. Two of the horses will be on site Saturday.
