Central Ga. firefighters prepare for Tunnel to Towers climb

Firefighters to participate in Tunnel to Towers

On September 11th, 2001, off-duty firefighter Stephen Siller suited up with 60 pounds of gear, and raced to the World Trade Center where he lost his life.

In honor of Siller, the Tunnel to Towers run was created.

Firefighters from around Central Georgia will run up more than 70 flights of stairs -- in full gear -- in the Westin Hotel in Atlanta.

A portion of the money raised this year will go to the family members of Macon County firefighter Darrell Plank. Plank died from a head injury received while responding to a rural house fire.

The Robins Air Force Base Fire Department also donated an undisclosed amount of money to Plank's family.

Macon County assistant fire chief Chad Yoder says he appreciates the brotherhood of emergency workers.

“[It’s] the show of support from these different departments, and these individuals willing to give some of their time. Just to see them come together the way they have a rally around us.”

Firehouse Subs is selling special boxed lunches to help raise money for the event.

The Tunnel to Towers challenge is Saturday, June 24.
