As people in Texas start to recover from Hurricane Harvey and its flooding, one Central Georgia church is doing their part to help those in need.
When April Fox saw Hurricane Harvey’s destruction, she knew she had to do something.
“I was just heartbroken, shattered, I had so many emotions and I didn’t know what to do with it,” Fox said. “I knew everyone was feeling those emotions.”
With the help of her sister and Centerpoint Church in Warner Robins, they are doing something to help the victims.
“They have the big organizations to come in and give that immediate relief, but eventually they're going to step out,” Fox said.
That’s why for the next few weeks, they're collecting daily essentials from socks to diapers and even cleaning supplies.
Fox says they are letting FEMA and the Red Cross take care of the immediate need, but they hope to be a second wave relief.
On September 21st, they'll head to Texas to help with the cleanup efforts.
“We're stepping in at a time when their trying to redevelop life versus recovering it,” Fox said.
Jan Ewing joined the effort. He says the devastation hits closer to home, since his son’s finance lives down there.
“They didn’t get flooded out, but they didn’t have access to it and they didn’t have power for over a week,” Ewing said. “Of course, without being flooded, you’ve still got losses.”
That's why they hope their efforts will leave a lasting impact.
“We’re not going to swoop in one weekend rebuild or recreate the city,” Fox said. “We’re hoping that they realize that Middle Georgia is thinking about them. We’re hoping to be a blessing even if it’s just for one day.”
