Crews install massive crane in downtown Macon

The Medical Center Navicent Health says they've reached a milestone in construction of their new Children's Hospital.  Starting Tuesday, a massive crane is being installed at the construction site in downtown Macon. Yvonne Thomas took a look at the future Beverly Olson Children's Hospital.

It's 140 feet tall, 264 feet long, and weighs 500 tons. Timothy Slocum, the Vice President of System Support Services says, it's a big crane designed to help crews with an even bigger construction project. “Today's assembly of the construction tower crane is a big milestone,” said Slocum. “It will A... lift all the construction materials to on the site, and B, when we start to pour the concrete structure of the building, it will be responsible for lifting that concrete and actually making the concrete pours.”

Tuesday and Wednesday, rain or shine, crews are hard at work installing the massive machine to help build a foundation for the new Beverly Olson Children's Center. “We're excited about being able to expand our pediatric services, and we're excited about bringing together a lot of the services that we offer today,” said Slocum.

Crews broke ground on the $68 million project in March. It should be completed by Summer 2019. “The community is really going to see the growth in the structure and really start to see this building coming out of the ground in the next few months.”

And Slocum believes the installation of the heavy-duty crane is a major step to help little ones in Central Georgia.

While the crane is being installed, there are a few temporary road closures that you should keep in mind. The intersection of Hemlock and Spring Street to Pine Street and Spring Street are closed until 6:00 Wednesday night.

Drivers are asked to avoid this area and use alternate routes around Navicent Health.
