Football and cupcakes: Central Ga. rolls out welcome mat for Irma evacuees

Monroe Co. comes together to fill 1000 welcome bags for evacuees

With all of the hotels filled to capacity around the midstate, all those folks are going to need something to do.

How about taking in a game of football?

That's what Mercer University is offering free of charge.

Families who evacuated to central Georgia are invited to attend Mercer's 4 p.m. game Saturday against Wofford free of charge.

Evacuees affected by the storm can get their game tickets the following four ways:

  • E-mail Mercer Athletics or call (478) 301-5217 to request/reserve tickets
  • Pick up tickets at Macon's Grand Opera House 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday and Friday
  • Check the front desk at your hotel starting Friday for a voucher
  • Walk-up at will call ticket booth Saturday at Five Star Stadium (proof of ID necessary)

And if football isn't tasty enough for you, how about cupcakes?

Evacuees traveling with children are invited to Cake Memories Bakery, 1906 US HWY 441 S., Dublin, for free cupcakes.

Call the bakery for details at (478) 304-1514. They're open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
