Forsyth teen creates his own summer job

With summer in full swing, a lot of teenagers are laying back and enjoying their time off, but not 15-year-old Hunter Benson.

Benson not only has a summer job, but he's created his own running and managing a produce stand in Forsyth.

"Because no other company would hire me so this is my way of making money in the summer," Benson says.

He says it's so much more than selling fruits and veggies. He does everything from buying the produce at local farms to taking inventory and hiring his workers.

"I thought it was pretty cool. All of my employees are older than me," Benson says.

Having four employees right now, Benson says they range from teenagers to a man in his 70s.

Employee Kaylie Kimsey says she loves working for Benson. He makes the job look easy.

"He is probably one of the best sellers that we have. If someone is thinking about something, he convinces them to buy it," Kimsey says.

Kimsey says because of Benson's age, some people assume he's just another employee.

"Sometimes, people, they always ask us if, the different girls and stuff, if we are all family because he is so young, and I think they expect him to just be our younger brother, but little do they know he's actually the owner of the stand," she says.

And once customers find out, "They think it's cool that I'm running this when I'm only 15 years old because they say that they didn't even have a job at my age," Benson says.

But he says you are never too young to start thinking about college.

"I ask for tips for college and I put them in a savings account, but I hope I don't have to use that savings account for college. I hope I can get a scholarship," Benson says.

Benson says he's just got to keep working hard and hopefully that dream will come true, too.

Benson says hopes he can inspire more kids his age to start running their own businesses. All you have to do is find your passion and go for it.

The fruit stand is located right off Exit 185 right in Forsyth next to the Shell Station.

They are open seven days a week from 8 in the morning to 7 at night.
