100-year-old celebrates with The Varsity tradition

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Want to know the secret to a long life? A local group of friends may have figured it out.

11Alive's Kaitlyn Ross sat down with them at The Varsity, where they've been meeting up for over 20 years!

"Whaddayahavewhaddayahavewhaddayahave," asks The Varsity server.

For 100-year-old Luther Walden, the answer is always the same.

"Chili dogs, onion rings, and a medium Coke," he said.

He orders it at least once a week with his friends at the Varsity. They've been going every week for the past 20 years, but this week was special.

"I'm 100 today. Ooh, I feel like I'm 80," he said.

His crew is normally about 15 people, but on his 100th birthday, more than 50 showed up to celebrate, including his friend Bob Eason, who was also marking a special year.

"What am I? 94? Dang! I hate to be that old. But I just can't help it," said Eason.

Luther and Bob proudly keep up the tradition at The Varsity every week, catching up and telling a few jokes.

"Do you feel any older? You don't look any older," said Luther.

The two say their time spent together, and with friends and family every week keep them young. Well, that, and their so-called fountain of youth.

"Eating chili dogs," said Luther.
