Barrow, Allen both target Obama in early TV ads

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Early campaign ads by Democratic Rep. John Barrow and the Republican Rick Allen, the challenger for his east Georgia congressional seat, are focused on the same target: President Barack Obama.

Barrow of Augusta began airing TV ads Thursday in which the five-term Democrat says "I took them on" when the Obama administration failed to request funding this year to deepen the Port of Savannah's harbor.

Courting independent and conservative voters is essential for Barrow in Georgia's 12th District, which was drawn to favor Republicans.

Allen, a GOP businessman from Augusta, also uses his first ad of the fall campaign to point a finger at Obama, while ignoring Barrow altogether. "Look at the mess Obama's made," Allen says as he lists problems from veterans' medical treatment to the rollout of the federal health-care website.
