Man drowns trying to save child in Chattahoochee River

SMYRNA, Ga. -- Cobb County Fire officials say they pulled a man and child out of the Chattahoochee River Sunday night.

It happened on South Atlanta Road on the Cobb-Fulton border.

According to the fire department, a group of people was playing in the water when a 6-year-old boy lost his footing. A man in his late 20's jumped in to save the child, but was not seen again.

Meantime, another adult downstream managed to reach the child and pull him to safety.

Cobb County fire officials later pulled the man in his 20's out of the water and rushed him to the hospital in "full arrest," which means he was not breathing.

The child was taken to another hospital as a precaution.
