Severe-weather tips about insurance

Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens offers these tips for homeowners preparing for severe weather:.

He says standard homeowner's insurance policies tend to cover damage from high winds and tornadoes, but they do not cover flood damage. Hudgens says the National Flood Insurance program havae separate policies to purchase.

If you have a mobile home, he says you should double check your policy because standard mobile home policies usually cover flood damage.

Homeowners should make a list of furniture and valuables, and keep pictures of them as well. The photos can be used as proof of lost valuables, if an insurance claim is needed.

If you have roof damage, cover the damage with a tarp to prevent water damage.
