Groundbreaking ceremony held for Freedom Park improvements

Groundbreaking held for Freedom Park upgrades

Freedom Park in Macon is getting more upgrades.

Macon-Bibb County Commissioner, the Parks and Recreation Department, and the Vine-Ingle Little League held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning to celebrate.

The improvements, funded by SPLOST, will include four new baseball and softball fields, moving Morgan Drive and removing the old pool. The total cost is $2.6 million.

The new facilities will be home for Vine-Ingle Little League's baseball and softball teams.

Commissioner Elaine Lucas says the league and the improvements are near and dear to her heart.

"This just means an awful lot. My children played on some of these fields because they were so involved in athletics. It is so important for us to have offerings like this all over our community," Lucas said.

The improvements are scheduled to start in the next few weeks and last about nine months.
