GSP: Driver in fatal Perry accident tried to avoid collision

New information is available in Friday's accident in Perry that killed a Brantley County toddler.

The DPS Public Information Office says 34-year-old Aaron Mater, of Waycross, was driving northbound in the middle lane of I-75 in a 2000 GMC Yukon.

A tractor-trailer slowed down in front of them as crews were working an accident near mile marker 136.

Mater reportedly tried to stop, but his car skidded on the wet pavement.

He tried to steer left to avoid hitting the truck, but hit the left rear end of the truck with the front right end of his Yukon.

Mater’s passenger, 2-year-old Ava Mater, died at the scene.

GSP says she was in a car seat in the front passenger seat.

Charges are pending following a reconstruction of the scene.
