Putnam sheriff: Murdered son not tied to father's killing

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said he's well aware that Russell and Shirley Dermond's son was shot to death in 2000, but investigators do not believe that's in anyway related to the death of his father and the disappearance of his mother.

"There seems to be no connection there" Sills said regarding the murder of Mark Dermond, who was shot to death in Atlanta. Sills said his office has already ordered the Mark Dermond case file from Atlanta PD and they are digging it out of their archives

"Mark Dermond's death certificate is sitting right here on my desk," Sills told 13WMAZ's Anita Oh.

Russell Dermond's beheaded body was found Tuesday at the couple's million dollar home on Lake Oconee and officers cannot locate his wife and investigators believe she's in "imminent danger" and feared kidnapped.

Putnam County Coroner Gary McElhenney said Russell Dermond died from cranial cerebral trauma and they believe his head was cut off after he was killed.
