Houston County principal receives national award

One Warner Robins principal is celebrating after winning a prestigious award. Dr. Cynthia Hammond of Westside Elementary won the 2017 Georgia National Distinguished Principal award. Hammond's students and staff are extremely proud and decided to do something special for her, so they threw a surprise ceremony in her honor. Yvonne Thomas brings you inside the fun-filled ceremony.     

Westside Elementary students filled the gym with excitement and anticipation. The entire school planned a secret celebration to honor their principal for winning a prestigious award.

Cynthia Hammond won the 2017 Georgia National Distinguished Principal award for the entire state. “I was so surprised. I feel so honored right now to receive this prestigious award,” said Hammond.

It was hard for Hammond to hold back tears as she watched her staff and students celebrate, but Hammond says the successes really worth celebrating are the success' of her staff and students. “I love empowering them. I love empowering my teachers to do the best that they can do,” said Hammond.

On top of all the love she received on Friday, Hammond also got a $2,500 check and a set of new wheels, a bicycle. She's worked eight years at Westside Elementary. “This is what I do and I do it for the children,” said Hammond. Hammond says this is only the beginning, because for her every day is a great day to be a Wildcat.

That award came from the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals.Hammond will travel to Washington, DC in October to meet with other top principals from across the country.
