Huge solar farm headed to site near Robins AFB

A state board is scheduled to vote Tuesday on Georgia Power's plan for a large solar farm just north of Robins Air Force Base.

A Georgia Power spokesman would not disclose the exact site of the proposed farm.

But a Georgia Public Service Commission staff memo says it would be located on land owned by the Central Georgia Joint Development Authority.

That's the agency that purchase more than 200 properties, in south Bibb County and Houston County, to prevent encroachment on the Robins runway.

Georgia Power says the solar farm will produce 139 megawatts -- enough to power more than 20,000 homes.

The company says the project will benefit Robins by supplying a cheap and steady power supply.

The utility would get a 35-year lease for the property.

The solar farm could be operating by December 2019, according to the public-service commission staff.

Georgia Power spokesman John Kraft said the cost of the project is still  undetermined.
