IRWINTON, GA.-- - The Georgia State Patrol is working on figuring out how a Wilkinson County man was hit and killed while riding his lawnmower on highway 96 and JR Sims Road Sunday.
The Georgia State Patrol says 39-year-old Christopher Young was riding his lawnmower along the highway Sunday at 4 a.m. when he was hit from behind and killed. Both the vehicle and Young's lawnmower overturned and landed in a ditch nearby.
Troopers say he was declared dead at the scene. A neighbor said off camera that Young was disabled and would sometimes use his lawnmower to get around. He also said he saw the car that allegedly hit Young resting on top of a fence at the scene.
The GSP refused to comment on why Young was driving his lawnmower on the highway or who may have hit him. But his family says they are grieving the loss of their loved one and hope that law enforcement can figure out what happened.
The Georgia State Patrol says their accident-reconstruction team is investigating the case. Charges for the driver are now pending. Young's family says he leaves behind two children and two stepchildren.
