Judge suspends Gordon mayor Whipple-Lue from office

A Wilkinson County Superior Court judge on Monday ordered Gordon Mayor Mary Ann Whipple-Lue suspended from office while he hears the lawsuit seeking to remove her permanently.

Seven people including councilman Terry Eady, calling themselves Concerned Citizens of Gordon, filed the suit claiming that Whipple-Lue spent city money without authority and held meetings that violated the state's Open Meetings law.

Judge Robert Reeves had set an August 1 trial on the lawsuit. But he said the plaintiffs have shown they may suffer irreparable harm if Whipple-Lue were not immediately removed before the lawsuit is decided.

Eady, also the mayor pro-tem, is now acting Mayor.

The judge scheduled a hearing for June 24 to decide whether to issue a temporary injunction further barring Whipple-Lue from office until the trial.

Gordon's city council is meeting Monday night. Our reporter Sitarah Coote is at the meeting and we'll have the latest on 13wmaz.com and Eyewitness News at 10 and 11.
