Laurens County Fire Department needs volunteers

The Laurens County Fire Department is looking to add to their team of volunteer firefighters.

Elaine Brantley knows Laurens County's fire department is busy because she hears so many sirens near her Dublin home.

"If that's an indication of the number of emergency calls that go out in a day's or week's time, I would think that more firefighters would be a great idea for the county," Brantley said.

And the department is trying to make happen. The county is hoping to get at least 10 volunteers to work out of their 17th fire department, but Fire Chief Don Brantley says they're hoping for more.

"10 would give us a pool of people that when we did have an emergency, that hopefully would be able to respond to supplement the call," Bryant said.

Bryant says they're looking for people who can handle a demanding job.

"They need to be people that have endurance," Bryant said. "Because you don't have a fire every day, but when you do, and somebody's life or property is at stake, you can't get to a point and say, 'I can't go on.' You have to endure 'til the end."

He says the county offers a small incentive to volunteers -- about $350 at Christmas.

"It's just a gift the county gives to show their appreciation for what those people do," Bryant said.

Bryant says the job is demanding but fulfilling.

"We've got a good fire department, we've got a lot of good, trained volunteers and paid staff, but we need to supplement that," Bryant said.

There will be two information and recruitment meetings. The first on Friday August 25th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The second on Saturday August 26th from 1:30-3:00 p.m.

The meetings will be held at Fire Station #18:
