Macon daycare worker charged with child cruelty

A daycare worker was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with cruelty to children, according to a Bibb Sheriff’s Office incident report.

It says a deputy responded to The Learning Place at 1569 Edna Place around 10:40 a.m. for a cruelty to children call.

The mother of the child told the deputy that her daughter came home Monday and had scratches along her left arm. When she asked her daughter how she got the scratches, she said, “Ms Cassandra did it.”

The report says the deputy spoke to the daycare’s childcare coordinator, Yvonne Shaw, and asked if the mother could view video of the alleged abuse

In the video, the mother said she could see Cassandra Gray grabbing her child several times and yanking her off the floor.

The report says the mother stated, “The school said they would fire her, but I can’t to press charges on how she grabbed my child.”

The deputy then watched the video in the office with Gray, who reportedly said, “She was really acting out yesterday. I don’t normally have a problem with her.”

Gray told the deputy the child does things frequently to hurt herself, and on Monday she scratched herself all over with a hair clip.

The deputy then watched the footage with a sergeant and says in the report that you can clearly see Gray wrapping her hand around the child’s left arm to move her off the sleeping mat.

The report says Shaw suggested they speak with the child’s main teacher, who told them she had never seen the child scratch or hurt herself on purpose. She also said the only time she had ever seen the child with scratches was when she was bitten by an ant.

The deputy told Gray she would be taken into custody for cruelty to children in the second degree, to which she repeated that the child did it to herself.

Gray was taken to the Bibb County jail and bonded out seven hours later.
