Arrest made in Bibb Sheriff's Office employee's death

UPDATE 10/28/15 4:29 p.m.:

Bibb County Sheriff's deputies have arrested and charged 19-year-old Michael Dewayne Hardy, Jr. with felony murder in the shooting death of a 23-year-old Macon man.

Vernard Mays, who was an employee for the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, was shot at his home on Second Street just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. He was pronounced dead at Medical Center, Navicent Health.

Hardy is in the Bibb County jail. No bond for him has been set.


A Macon man was shot to death after someone knocked on his back door and fired several shots at him when he answered. That's according to a news release from the Bibb Sheriff's Office.

The victim, Vernard Mays, was age 23. The sheriff's office says it happened along the 2400 block of Second Street in Macon around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

According to investigators, the gunman ran away after shooting Mays in the groin. Mays' mother called 911. He was pronounced dead at Medical Center Navicent Health.

Mays worked in the Bibb County Sheriff's Office warrants division for three months, sheriff's office officials said.
