Along one the main drags through the Northwest D.C. neighborhood known as Chevy Chase, you'll find something familiar - Macon Bistro and Larder.
It's the brain-child of former Maconite Tony Brown, and blends the flavors of the south with the spices of a world traveller.
Think Macon, Georgia meets sister city Macon, France.
Brown has lived in the Chevy Chase area of Washington D.C. for 15 years, but grew up learning about southern cooking from his grandmothers in Macon.
Brown's mother, Nancy Cornett still lives there and says he wanted to create a sense of community, a place where people come together to share food and life.
"My cooking background is grounded in French technique and French culinary tradition, so it really made sense to do a bistro, and as we were thinking about ways to make it work, decided that I really wanted to bring some of my story and my history into that mix," Brown says.
He has pictures of his two grandmothers on the walls and he has encapsulated or included some of their restaurant, in the restaurant, some of their menus and named them. Like GG Mama, who was his great grandmother, GG Mama's coconut cake.
Brown raised part of the money to open Macon Bistro and Larder on the website kickstarter.com. Supporters raised more than 30,000 dollars and the grand opening was held in April.
Brown says since opening, many people have come in and told him they're from Macon or have some connection to the city. He says he'd love to welcome anyone from Macon to eat there if they make a trip to the nation's capital.
As for his favorite spots in Macon, Brown says he enjoys NuWay and Fincher's when he's home.
