Correction: The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says Walter Smith brandished a gun at officers, but it's unclear whether he fired it. That is under investigation by the GBI.
The GBI has been asked to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Macon's Village Green.
That's according to a release.
A Bibb County man is in stable condition after he was shot by an officer in Macon's Village Green neighborhood around 6 p.m. Thursday.
Bibb County Sheriff David Davis says Sgt. Scott Johnson and Officer James Litton were conducting traffic stops when they pulled over Walter Cornelius Smith, 54 on Bloomfield Road, after they saw his vehicle "traveling at a high rate of speed," according to the release.
That's when witnesses say Smith waved a gun, then drove to his home on Satterfield Drive where he jumped out of his car and went to his back yard.
An officer fired at Smith, shooting him in the chest.
He's now in stable condition and being treated at the Medical Center.
Witnesses said they saw one officer fire back and reported hearing multiple shots.
It was the second time Thursday afternoon that a Bibb deputy fired shots in a neighborhood.
Davis says the two shootings aren't connected.
