The College Hill Alliance broke ground Friday morning right behind the post office.
The lot is empty now, but soon, it will match the three existing loft properties on Cherry Street, Poplar Street, and in Mercer Village.
Even though it is the fourth location, the mayor thinks it stands apart from the others.
"The previous loft developments have been exclusively for on-campus housing and for students," notes Mayor Reichert. "And while there was retail that was available to the surrounding neighborhoods, this is the first time that the lofts have actually moved into the neighborhood."
One of those retailers is Boba Mocha. This tea and coffee fusion shop is the Loft's first confirmed business.
Co-Owner Judy Chen's family already owns Macon and Warner Robins restaurant chain Chen's Wok. When it came to expanding, though, she knew she wanted to do something different.
"Not to do the same old same old family concept," says Chen. She thought of Boba Mocha founder, Ken Ong and saw its potential. "Ken's concept is very very unique and very very exciting and very fun! And that would be something we need for Macon."
These business owners and loft residents are part of a much bigger picture of revitalizing Macon's historic neighborhoods.
"The walk-able urban lifestyle has a lot going for it and is attracting people to move into our community," concludes Mayor Reichert.
The Lofts at College Hill are scheduled for completion by summer of next year.
