Jeffersonville Road upgrades set to move forward

County leaders announced they're planning to move forward with fixing Jeffersonville Road in east Bibb County, which they say is long overdue.

County Commission Chairman Sam Hart says he signed a contract on Tuesday that would put up $2 million in county funds up front to begin working on the project. The money would be used to purchase the needed rights of way that are currently privately owned.

The plan would widen the road, smooth out potholes, and also provide sidewalks going up Millerfield Road.

The road was initially supposed to be fixed in the 1990's, but after running into environmental concerns and a lack of funding, the project was put on hold.

"Some of us had wondered whether we'd ever have a chance of seeing it our lifetime," says Commissioner Lonzy Edwards.

He says residents in east Bibb County had wanted the fix for years.

Hart says the fix covers a stretch of several miles on Jeffersonville Road. He says people have complained about the roads being too narrow and bumpy.

After the initial funding is complete, they'll need another $48 million to finish the entire project, which they say stretches several miles.
