UPDATE: Man shot Friday in east Macon dies, arrest made

UPDATE: A 20-year-old man died at the hospital late Friday after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest earlier that day.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office arrested Demarcus Smith, 16, charging him with murder and criminal street gang activity.

The Sheriff's office says the shooting was connected to a Macon gang.

Smith is legally a juvenile but he's being charged as an adult after a fatal shooting.

The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. on Tredway Drive near Shurling Drive. Lt. Sean Defoe said the victim, Kemani Ridgeway, 20, and his girlfriend pulled up to the side of a vacant building next to a gas station to speak to three men.

Ridgeway got out of the car to speak to them and sometime during the conversation, Defoe says, one of the three people pulled out a gun and shot Ridgeway in the chest. Smith was taken to the county's Regional Youth Detention Center.
