Magician raising funds for Brave Meadows Farm

A group in Gray is rallying together this weekend to raise money for a ranch that using horseback riding therapy to help people with disabilities.  Yvonne Thomas took a trip to Brave Meadows Recreation Center, and spoke to a volunteer who say the program helped her family when they needed it.

Nearly every weekend, Cathy Walker spends hours at Brave Meadows Therapeutic Center. It's a home away from home that became a refuge for her family nearly a decade ago.  “This is a place where people can come and enjoy a normal life,” said Walker. “I've been out here for 7 years. My granddaughter, she was born with spina bifida. She was doing pretty good, but I was thinking that this could help her a little bit.”

Here at Brave Meadows horse riding is a form of therapy. “It's hard to put into words what this means to me and other families,” said Walker. For little or no cost, kids with disabilities or disabled veterans have a hands-on environment where they can learn at their own pace. “It helps develop their core muscles. It can help with hand-eye coordination,” said Walker.

But even though the program is inexpensive for riders, it comes at a cost for the ranch, especially in cooler months of the year. “It does take a lot of money to run this place,” said Walker. “The horses need a lot of hay and there's not a lot of green grass in the winter, so our needs do go up in the winter.”

Mark the Magic Man is hoping to double their income this weekend by hosting two magic shows to benefit the riding center. “What we're doing is trying to create a way for more donations to keep coming in,” said Mark the Magic Man.

So that others can continue to strut, learn, and be brave, Mark the Magic Man is hosting two magic shows at Jones County High School this Saturday. The shows start at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. VIP seating is $20. Tickets for kids twelve and under is $5, and adult ticket prices are $10.
