Man killed after high-speed chase in Peach Co.

A Peach County man was killed in a fatal single-car accident early Sunday morning, according to Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese.

He says they received a call around 4:20 a.m. Sunday about a burglar alarm going off at Nick’s Food Mart in Fort Valley.

As the deputy arrived, a small gray car sped off on Highway 341N towards Roberta.

Deese says the deputy chased the car, but the driver was going at a very high rate of speed – at one point the car was a quarter mile ahead of the deputy.

The driver, identified as Gregory Wainwright, lost control of the vehicle around Lee Pope Road and went off the road.

The car overturned, fatally injuring Wainwright. Deese says he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
