Pastor dies in Lake Sinclair accident

A Milledgeville pastor is dead after an accident at Lake Sinclair.

Captain Brad King with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office says Wendell Ray Thomas, 75, died when his truck and boat trailer became submerged underwater. According to King, the sheriff's office got a call shortly after three when people noticed debris and then saw the boat the trailer had carried floating near the shoreline.

King says firefighters arrived first and found the vehicle totally underwater and still attached to the trailer. They broke the window to get Thomas out. He was taken to Oconee Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 4:30 p.m.

Investigators inspected Thomas's truck after it was pulled from the water. King says they don't think mechanical failure was involved, but he believes Thomas may have put been trying to pull his trailer back onto dry land after launching his boat when the accident happened.

Thomas was a longtime member of the Milledgeville Community and founding pastor of Freedom Church on Underwood Road.
