Neighbors "horrified" by Putnam homicide

People who live in the neighborhood near Russell and Shirley Dermond say they're in disbelief over the horror that took place at a nearby home.

They say the murder-kidnapping is a crime they just don't understand and has shaken their sense of security in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says Russell Dermond was killed inside his million-dollar home, but there are no signs of a struggle.

His wife, Shirley Dermond is missing.

Neighbor Ann Dructor says she's now watching the lakeside of her home extra carefully because while the front gates of the Reynolds Plantation neighborhood is gated, lake access is public.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says the department's main focus is now the search for and safe return of Shirley Dermond.

Anyone with information on the case should call the Putnam County Sheriff's Department at (706) 485-8557.
