FVSU hosts 'Green Up Clean Up' event

People in Fort Valley had a chance to get a jump start on their spring cleaning Saturday morning.

Fort Valley State University's Cooperation Extension held the Green Up Clean Up event to help people tidy up and recycle responsibly. FVSU's extension housing specialist Keishon Thomas explained the reasoning behind the event. She said, "In the cooperative extension program, we have a housing area and one of the things for the housing area is to obtain and maintain healthy sanitary housing. We wanted to make sure we brought the resources to the community rather than the community trying to search out and find. We figured if we put everything in a one stop shop kind of place that people would be able to partake in at least one or more of the stops."

The Green up Clean up event allowed people to come through and drop off a variety of items from recyclables to old documents that needed to be shredded to items for Goodwill. All drivers had to do was pull up and put it in the box.

Each of the stations had volunteers to help drivers. In addition to sorting cans from plastic and shredding papers, there was also a car seat checkup and air filters for homes. That let people get a lot done at one time. Taira Daniely went and dropped off some items with her mom and sister. She explained the process, saying, "We came through and you were able to drop off an air filter, pick up light bulbs, drop off recyclables, drop off shredded paper and it was all in one area. Its so easy and convenient."

Event organizers say this is the first ever Green Up Clean Up event but they hope to have another one next year.
