The Newman building on First Street is making a comeback.
However, it won't be the only vacant and underused building in downtown Macon getting attention in the near future.
Historic Macon won a grant to host a series of "Preservation Pop-Up Speakeasies" to showcase underused buildings in downtown Macon.
Special Events coordinator Emily Hopkins says the Newman building has an incredible history. Around 1875, it served as a private social club for males only, which inspired the theme for the speak easy that she'll host there Thursday.
"We actually think it genuinely was a speakeasy at one point in Macon, so we were really able to run with that when developing our theme called the Progress Club. The Progress Club was actually an all-males social club or group that met here in the back room of this building," Hopkins said.
Hopkins says Thursday's event is sold out. They started out with 150 tickets.
