Reddings' Dream Academy could be headed to Vineville Avenue

Dream Academy could come to Vineville Avenue

The Otis Redding Foundation's Dream Academy charter school could be headed to a building on Vineville Avenue.

The Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning Commission Monday is scheduled to hear the foundation's plans to open up at 1985 Vineville Ave. on Monday -- that's the location of the former Scottish Rite building near Vineville Towers.

The foundation is asking the board for a certificate of appropriateness to locate at the two-acre site and approval for a proposed addition there.

Leaders of the charter school plan to renovate the 36,000-square-foot building and add on classrooms.

They hope to open in fall 2018.

Plans filed with the zoning board say they expect to enroll nearly 600 students and there will be 90 parking spaces on the site.

The Dream Academy is inspired by the work of soul music legend Otis Redding and supported by his family.

"Dream Academy will provide a nurturing environment that will educate and empower students to reach their full potential through blends of music, the arts and academics," said to their application to the zoning board.
