MACON, GA.-- - Legendary Macon singer Otis Redding would have been 75 years old this year. Middle Georgia is celebrating his life and music accomplishments all week long.
The first celebratory kickoff event is a limited edition "Macon Dream" ale. It is named after Redding’s song “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember”.
The Macon Beer Company and the Otis Redding Foundation are remembering the King of Soul with a taste of Georgia.
"Macon Dreams, they said that's what they wanted to be called. It just fit perfectly. They wanted a peach beer. So we've done one in the past so we took what we knew from that and molded it into a brand new beer,” says owner of Macon Beer Company, Jeremy Knowles.
A peach and blood orange flavored brew that dozens will be able to try Wednesday at the unveiling and bottle dedication. Redding's grandson says even decades later his fans have been unwavering.
"Just to come away knowing what type of person he was. The fans that have been supporting him for over 50 plus years since he has passed away. Now here we are celebrating his 75th birthday and I mean the support from the community is just amazing,” says Justin Andrews.
So amazing that the Otis Redding foundation wanted to return the support.
"Why not give back a little bit and let everybody enjoy some ice cold beer in the middle of September,” says Andrews.
What better way to celebrate one of music's hottest entertainers than with a cold one. The unveiling of the beer will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Macon Beer Company on Oglethorpe Street. Visitors will have a chance to try the "Macon Dreams" ale and tour the facility.
There will also be an Otis Redding tribute concert on Sunday at the Macon City Auditorium at 7 p.m. You can buy tickets on the Otis Redding Foundation website.
