Stolen mail truck used in burglary of Macon business

Stolen mail truck used in burglary

A truck contracted with the U.S. Postal Service was stolen late Saturday night and used to help burglarize a Macon business.

"I came in early Sunday morning for a run and found that somebody had cut a pretty large-sized hole in the back of my business," says Ricky Cain, owner of Trained By Cain Studio on Ingleside Avenue.

Surveillance cameras next door at the Macon Volunteer clinic caught the whole thing on video, but this wasn't your average break-in.

A DT Express mail truck is seen pulling into the back of Cain's studio with two male suspects inside. The clinic did not want to release the surveillance video to 13WMAZ before turning it over to police, but Cain did share still photos of the video.

"Why such a large truck for such a small job," says Cain. The thieves only took a few tools, no gym equipment.

According to a Bibb County Sheriff's incident report, the GPS log of the truck shows that the vehicle left the parking lot of the U.S. Post Office on Hardeman Avenue on Saturday night around 10:00 p.m. and traveled to several locations around Macon.

The truck was found abandoned outside Home Delivery Link on Mercer University Drive on Monday morning.

According to the BSO incident report, the manager of DT Express, Jeff McCarter, says the truck is an extra in his fleet. He said he was unaware that it had been taken until it was found in this parking lot on Monday.

13 WMAZ called DT Express late Tuesday afternoon, we are waiting to hear back about the investigation.

"This is easy to fix. I can always buy more tools and take care of that, but when it comes down to it, whoever is driving that truck, I am going to find you," says Cain.

And according to Bibb County Investigator, Daniel Putnam, the man driving that truck may be found soon. He says one of the men has been identified and there are warrants out for his arrest.

The U.S. Postal Service also says they are investigating this case.
