The Georgia Sports and Music halls of fame are one step closer to getting the local funding they need from the city's hotel-motel tax.

State Representative Allen Peake says the one cent tax increase passed through the House on Thursday and is now headed to the Senate.

Disagreement over how to divide the tax increase has split local legislators.

Representative David Lucas first proposed using a quarter of the money to fund the Douglass Theatre, and another quarter to fund the study of a amphitheater or stadium.

On Wednesday, Lucas dropped his request for amphitheater funds, but still wanted an even portion of the money to go to the Douglass Theatre.

Representative Allen Peake said he would support a three way split, but only if 75% went to the halls, and 25% to the Douglass.

But, city council and county commission stood behind the two way split to only fund the Halls of Fame.

Without a resolution for a three-way split, the assembly could only vote for what they had on the table. Peake says with Senator Cecil Staton on board to support the bill, it now rests in the hands of Macon Senator Robert Brown.

Brown must act on it by next Wednesday to get it on the Senate floor next Friday, which is the last day of the session.
