A group of Mercer engineering students are going green with their designs.

Tuesday night they demonstrated a recycling robot.

The Mercer students designed the robot for the 2009 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE Southeast Student Hardware Competition held March 7th in Atlanta.

Robots from 38 teams across the southeast competed to see which robot could identify certain types of litter, pick it up and sort it the quickest with fewest errors.

Mercer's creation earned them the "Best Use of Recycled Materials" Award.

Students built the robot as part of their senior design project.

According to a news release Mercer's team, led by Dr. Donald Ekong, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering, is comprised of seniors James Klingler, Tim Reiner, Victor Trieu and John Wooden.
