ATLANTA (AP) -- Gov. Sonny Perdue has signed legislation that slaps Georgia drivers traveling well above the speed limit with stiff new fines.
The fines -- expected to total about $23 million a year -- are intended to help the state's cash-strapped network of trauma hospitals. Supporters say injuries from car accidents are clogging the state's trauma hospitals.
Perdue signed the measure Tuesday at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite campus.
The governor has been pushing the measure for three years now. The new law would tack on an additional $200 fine on drivers busted for topping 85 mph on four-lane roads and interstate highways, or 75 mph on two-lane roads.
