Severe weather swept over three Central Georgia counties Tuesday night, but local officials say they escaped serious damage.
The National Weather Service declared tornado warnings for Baldwin, Hancock and Washington counties from about 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The storm brought heavy rain, winds, thunder and lightning and some nickel-sized hail, especially in Washington County around Sandersville.
Several people told the Washington County Fire Department that they saw funnel-shaped clouds passing overhead as the storm moved over Sandersville.
But public-safety officials say there were no reports that the storm touched down.
At Washington County High School, the storm disrupted Honors Night in the school's cafeteria. About 200 people took refuge in the school's corridors as the storm clouds passed overhead. No one was injured and there was no reported damage to the school.
Wednesday morning, Washington officials said several downed trees had blocked roads, but they were already cleared.
