A Monroe County man whose wife allegedly hired a hit man to kill him says she's sick, not a criminal.

Emily Urquhart was arrested last week and charged with trying to hire a local firefighter to kill her husband.

Bill Urquhart of Forsyth says his wife's health problems and medication caused a breakdown.

"What went through my mind was that she had gotten to her breaking point," he said.

Urquhart says the couple has lived in Forsyth for 20 years. He calls her a loving wife who's taken pain medication for a host of medical problems - including spinal problems, back problems, extreme migraine headaches, stomach migraines and fibromyalgia, just to name a few.

He says his wife had to retire from her job as an administrator from Gordon College about 10 years ago, due to her severe medical problems.

She has also worked as Monroe County's deputy clerk of court, he said.

But Urquhart says she's never been in trouble, until now. That's why he couldn't believe it when police called to tell him she allegedly tried to have him killed. He thinks it was caused by the pain medication she's been taking for more than 10 years.

"After I had time to think about it," he said, "I knew that this was not my wife."

A Monroe County warrant says Emily Urquhart called Randy Inglett, a Forsyth firefighter, and asked him to kill her husband and another person. Investigators say Inglett reported the offer to police, has cooperated and has not been charged.

Bill Urquhart says he and Inglett became friends when they worked together at the Forsyth Fire Department.

He says that, before she was arrested, Emily was hospitalized, started recovering and apologized to Inglett.

"She realized what she had done, she tried to recant, tried to call him and asked him for his forgiveness, didn't know why she thought he would do anything like that," he said.

She was arrested May 18 and after two days at the Monroe County jail, a bond agreement sent her to a hospital for medical and psychiatric treatment. The bond also required her to wear an ankle monitor.

Bill Urquhart says she's still receiving treatment and he doesn't think she's a threat to anyone, including himself.

"I fully intend to keep my marriage together, I love my wife and I have supported her through her physical ailments and I will continue to support her through her emotional trauma," he said.
