President Barack Obama says the federal government is "determined to be as prepared as possible" for the next catastrophic hurricane.
A report from the Government Accountability Office says
government preparation isn't what it should be. Investigators say FEMA doesn't have a plan for coordinating all the national disaster exercises.
And FEMA reportedly can't track whether other federal agencies
and communities across the country are prepared to respond to
disasters.
Obama says people in hurricane-prone areas should take
responsibility for their own safety -- squirreling away supplies
such as nonperishable food, water, first aid kits and radios that
work in the rain.
The new hurricane season begins Monday.
