A horse in Wilkinson County tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
The North Central Health District says no human cases of the virus have been reported in Central Georgia.
It's commonly known as a sleeping sickness in horses.
The virus causes inflamation in the brain and spinal cord.
It can be transmitted to humans and animals by infected mosquitoes. But the state health district says it cannot be spread from horses to humans or between humans.
Initial symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, headache and lack of energy.
The state health district is urging people to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases by eliminating standing water on their property.
