If you depend on a rooftop antenna to get your favorite programs, you could be left in the dark come June 12 if you don't have the right equipment.
13WMAZ Engineer Rad Maddox says, "With your newer model TVs, it has a digital receiver in it that you can scan the channels directly into it. But if you have an older model with only an analog receiver in it, you'll need to go out and get yourself a converter box."
Maddox says it is simple to hook up. Just plug in the converter box and hook the antenna cable connector to the back of your TV. On June 12, 13WMAZ's engineering department will shut off the station's analog and old digital transmitter.
They will turn on a brand new high-powered digital transmitter. An analog to digital converter box will allow you to continue watching 13WMAZ. Maddox says to ensure uninterrupted programming, make sure you scan your channels once your converter box is hooked up.
"All you have to do is hit 'menu' and go down to 'auto scan.' Press 'select' and then press 're-scan.'
Maddox says failing to scan and re-scan is a common mistake.
If you are already using a converter box, you have to re-scan on June 12 because 13WMAZ's digital channel will change from 4 to 13.
If the box now is receiving the low-power digital signal on channel 4, you have to re-scan or you won't see the new digital signal on channel 13 when it goes on the air next Friday.
