Fire destroyed the home of a Washington County sheriff's lieutenant Thursday morning.

Washington County Sheriff Thomas Smith said Lt. Adolphus Foster came to work at 9 a.m. and learned of the fire a half-hour later. His wife and 5 year-old son were not in the home at the time of the fire, Smith said.

The home at 175 Phillips Road was destroyed, and Foster and his family lost everything, Smith said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

Friends and co-workers have started an account to help Foster and his family "get back on their feet," Smith said.

The account has been set up at the Wachovia Bank in Sandersville, Ga. The adress of the bank is 219 South Harris St., Sandersville, Ga., 31082.
