Radio Operators Prepare For Catastrophe

Emergency responders have to have a way to communicate with one another.

Volunteers and staff from the Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency prepared for a catastrophe Saturday, using amateur radios or ham radios.

Radio operators in Macon and across the nation tested emergency equipment as part of a field day.

Volunteers, also known as hams, practiced using the device as if it were the only way to deliver messages.

The communication tools proved useful during crisis situations like Hurricane Katrina and Macon's 2008 Mother's Day tornado.

"There was no communication, no radio communications, no power in that area when they got there and they were able to setup this command center with generators and setup radios and help volunteer groups with radio communication when they went out to search," said EMA volunteer, Jeff Amerson.

The goal of Saturday's test preparation day was to make contacts and practice communication with the radios.
