Emergency responders have to have a way to communicate with one another. Volunteers and staff from the Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency prepared for a catastrophe Saturday, using amateur radios or ham radios. Radio operators in Macon and across the nation tested emergency equipment as part of a field day. Volunteers, also known as hams, practiced using the device as if it were the only way to deliver messages. The communication tools proved useful during crisis situations like Hurricane Katrina and Macon's 2008 Mother's Day tornado.
The goal of Saturday's test preparation day was to make contacts and practice communication with the radios.
