Woman Dies After Lake Lanier Rescue Attempt

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- A 24-year-old Stone Mountain woman who was submerged in Lake Lanier for more than 12 minutes while trying to rescue a child has died.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Natural Resources, Robin Hill, said Ngoc Minn Vo died Monday at the Northeast Georgia Medical Centers.

The woman's family had been swimming near Van Pugh South Park in Hall County on Sunday afternoon when she went under while trying to rescue a child who had slipped off a float.

The 6-year-old boy was resuscitated and taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said he believed the boy, whose face was blue when Gwinnett County rescuers found him, should be fine.
